A STUDY OF PUBLIC LIFE / WHAKATŪ NELSON /

CLIENT. Nelson City Council / ROLE. Research, Analysis & Reporting / TIMEFRAME. 2018 / STATUS. Complete

Our approach to public life studies places people at the forefront of the planning and design process. By methodically observing people, and registering their patterns of activity, our studies reflect an accurate representation of who the users of our urban centres are, when they use the city, for how long, and for what purpose. With this data, we can then help our clients make informed changes to strengthen public life, and the social and economic values that public life supports.

For Whakatū (Nelson) city centre, our studies included seasonal registrations of pedestrian and cyclist movements, staying activities, occupancy of outdoor commercial seating, and an assessment of user age and gender.

The data generated from this study served as a foundation for Te Ara ō Whakatu (City Centre Spatial Plan), and informed a range of public realm upgrades to better meet the needs of city centre users.
