Nelson city centre plays a critical role in the regions social, culutral and economic health. It is a ‘smart little city’ and a destination to live, work and visit. Like many cities however, it also faces significant challenges around growth, intensification and climate change.

Informed by more than 200 hours of community engagement, Te Ara ō Whakatu provides a pathway to address challenges, weaving together planning, housing and infrastructural projects into a 30-year vision for the city centre. A vision that is responsive to climate change and intensification, enhanced transport modes, current and future investment and the city centre as a place for people.
